DVDisaster – Safety from data loss

November 2nd, 2005

Stumbled across this project today… Basically this program creates ‘error correction codes’ of your uncorrupted originals, and then later if the dvd/cd gets horribly scratched it can use those codes to rebuild the gaps from any unreadable sections of the disc. More space-friendly than trying to backup full images of all your movies/games/etc.

I know I’ve got something tdoo…

September 24th, 2005

No, that’s not a typo in the post title. This is just a quick post to let anyone reading my blog know about one of the many projects that have been keeping me from actually blogging.

A few months ago I was looking for a site to easily manage my to-do lists. I found a few but either they were a) crippled in order to entice me to buy a full-featured package, or b) they weren’t very good.

Furthermore I was looking for a project to test out some DHTML+Javascript (known by some as AJAX) interface-goodness.

So without further ado, I introduce you to the latest apathyant empire member:

www.tdoos.com

Try it out and let me know what you think. I appreciate any feedback, and I’m currently gearing up some ideas for the next iteration of the site.

July 16th, 2005

Just days after the releases of Mozilla Firefox 1.0.5 and Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.5, it appears likely that 1.0.6 versions of the two applications could be coming as early as next week. It is understood that API changes in 1.0.5 unintentionally broke some extensions.

Check out the color changing background algorithm

July 14th, 2005

Jeremy Parker has done a really neat bit of php-ery on his web gallery…

I have implemented a color-changing background algorithm for my photography website that is pretty cool. It’s an interesting use of PHP to calculate the average color of a given photo and use that as the background color. You can see it by viewing any of the photos on the site.

CNBC’s “The Big Idea” forces 1UP Editor to walk off in Disgust

July 8th, 2005

I’ve never walked off the set of a TV show in disgust before, but this week I did. There’s a first time for everything, I guess. After enduring it for about 10 or 15 minutes it was clear that the whole situation had been a set-up from outset.

Media coverage of the Canadian DMCA-like copyright legistlation

June 21st, 2005

University of Ottawa Law professor Michael Geist has been covering the Canadian government’s path towards a DMCA-like copyright legistlation pretty thoroughly. Below is an excerpt from one of his recent postings…

Most telling, however, was the appearance of Canadian Heritage Minister Liza Frulla. The Minister picked her photo-op to discuss the bill. She didn’t pick a library or a school or a university lab or the National Arts Centre or any other place that would tie copyright to the concerns of Canadians. No, she did her interview from an HMV, the foreign-owned record store. That is the proverbial picture telling a thousand words about Bill C-60.

Ouch.
